Super Sweet Produce
I bought a pineapple at Costco the other day, cut it up and took a bite. It was like
sinking my teeth in to an inch of frosting. It tasted like pure sugar. I looked at the label
and it said "Super Sweet." It was a hybrid. Genetically modified to be sweet.
Pineapples, like other passion fruit, are already high in sugar. They don't need to be sweeter.
The corn is "Sweet Corn," the cherries are "Premium Sweet Cherries." Are Americans demanding more sugar in the foods they eat?
Or is something else happening here?
The food regulators wear the same hats as the drug regulators, i.e., the Food And Drug Administration.
And we've all heard the reports that diabetes is increasing and is going to continue to increase.
Well, increasing the sugar content of our food is one way to ensure diabetes will go up. And I am sure you
are aware that 100 years ago the average sugar consumption was 5 lbs. per person. Now it's 125 lbs. per person. Why is all
this sugar being added to our diets? Who's doing it? Who's benefitting?
Don't go for sweet. Go for flavor!
So the next time you are at the grocery store, check the label. If it says "sweet," then it's
probably a sugar hybrid.
